Catch-22(v10)

When Colonel Cathcart heard of the deaths in his squadron he raised the number of mission needed to leave to 70. The guy Hungry Joe is only happy when he hasn't completed all his missions. When Hungry Joe completes all his missions he has nightmares and screams and acts like a maniac during the night. During the book it metions several trips to Rome and how the officers and enlisted men spend their time. Most of the time in Rome is with whores and prostitutes. When Yossarian was in the hospital with the man who saw everything twice he had the idea to fake the same disease to avoid combat duty. The origanal guy who had the disease died, but his family was already on the way so Yossarian was told by the doctors that he had to pretend they were his family. When Yossarian told the family his name what his name was the father could have swore his name was Guiseppe, the brother didn't doubt Yossarian and kept correcting the mother who kept saying Guiseppe. Yossarian was hit in the thigh during a mission and was badly injured. Yossarian lived no thanks to Aarfy, who is just annoying. Yossarian saw a psychiatrist in the hospital who decided he was crazy so Yossarian could go home, but the psychiatrist thought Yossarian was someone else so he had to stay. I know this blog jumped around but that is actually how most of the story is.

Catch-22(v6... skipped it)

There is of course in every army a chaplain. The Chaplain is the priest for all of the squadrons on Pianosa. The Chaplain's only real friend is Yossarian, Yossarian keeps asking the chaplain to get high officials to lower the number of missions. The chaplain lives in the middle of the woods with Corporal Whitcomb, who is a doushbag. Corporal Whitcomb says he tries to help the Chaplain but is really problem. The Chaplain ran into the squadron to meet Major Major about the missions, half way there he sees someone coming from the other way and runs into the woods. When he gets to Major Major's office he is allowed to go in since Major Major isn't there. Thinking it was a joke, and he was fooled by what the guy at the door said, he jumps out the window which is actually a common route in and out. The Chaplain runs back to his tent, again avoiding someone on the way back. When he returns Whitcomb is sitting in his tent, Whitcomb says Major Major stopped by to see him, and he left a top secret letter for him. Corporal Whitcomb told the Chaplain the contents of the letter because he had ripped it open, read it, and then thrown it out. Another thing with the Chaplain is that he keeps getting thrown out and let back into the officers club for no real reason.

Catch-22(v9)

I'm now on chapter 32 out of 43. The book is a great book and is still funny. However, the book is extremely strange and complicated. In some conversations the place and the people talking will all of a sudden be different. The stupidity of some of the people and the stubbornness of some of the people is extremely annoying. The book all in all is good but there is no one straight storyline, it jumps around a lot and I know why some people don't understand this book. Some other characters that I haven't mentioned that are mentioned are: Chief White Halfoat, Nately, Major --- De Coverly, Colonel Cargill, Colonel Schieskopf, Aarfy, Nately's Whore, Nurse Duckett, Nurse Cramer, Colonel Korn, Major Danby, Captain Black, Hungry Joe, the Texan, Dunbar, ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen, Corporal Snark, and Sergent Knight.

Catch-22(v8)

This book is about a war. In war casualties are inevitable. So I thought I'd go through how has died or gone missing. A guy named Clevinger and the plane he was in disappeared and never was seen again. There was one guy that was being moved into Yossarian's tent that died in on a mission before he was unpacked. He had not been officially put in the squadron and is known as the dead man in Yossarian's tent. One of the missions Orr was piloting Orr crashed into the ocean as usual. Orr got separated from the rest of his crew in the water,a storm struck and Orr was never seen again. There have been other people who have died in the hospital such as the Soldier in White, who was in a full body cast, and the guy who saw everything twice. One day at the beach a guy name Kid Sampson was on this raft. McWatt was screwing around and flying low. Kid Sampson jumped up to touch the plane but McWatt had a miscalculation and cut Kid Sampson in half with the propeller. McWatt kept flying around the airfield and his passengers jumped out. Then McWatt flew past the airfield and dipped his wing in salute. McWatt then proceeded to fly the plane directly into the side of a mountain. I liked McWatt, he never got mad and was a nice guy, I wasn't happy to see him die. Doc Daneeka was scheduled to be on McWatts plane when it crashed, he wasn't. When no one saw Doc Daneeka jump out he was presumed dead, contrary to what Doc Daneeka was saying as he stood next to the people calling him dead. Doc Daneeka's wife got checks for her loss, and ended moving the Doc's family. Nobody in the squadron will acknowledge Doc Daneeka as if he was alive, Milo still gives him food but that's about it. So Doc Daneeka can't do anything, if he goes to headquarters they will cremate him.

Catch-22(v7)

Orr, he is Yossarian's roomate and is a pretty interesting guy. Orr is good with his hands and has customized their tent to be the best tent in the squadron. Orr puts puts crab apples and chestnut ts in his cheeks for no apparent reason. Orr is a pilot;Yossarian doesn't trust Orr as a pilot for pretty good reasons. In every mission Orr has flown, he has been shot down and safely crash landed. Nobody has died or been injured in Orr's planes but he still crashes into the ocean. There are only 5 pilots that have been mentioned. Orr, Hupple, Dobbs, Havermayer, and McWatt. Hupple is a young boy who isn't very good and Dobbs is mentally unstable. Havermayer never takes evasive action but always hits the target. McWatt is the pilot that Yossarian trusts most, he is not completely safe but Yossarian likes him the best. McWatt flies low, messes around, and is very dangerous. On a completely unrelated note Major Major does not allow anyone to meet wit him unless he is not at his tent. So you can only enter if he's not there.

Catch-22(v5)

There is a man in the book named Milo Minderbider. Milo is head of the mess hall in Yossarian's squadron. Milo sells eggs for 5 cents each but buys them for 7 cents each, in Malta, and still makes a profit. Milo made a syndicate in which everyone is a member and everyone has a share. He provides goods in return for a couple of planes to transport cargo and get supplies. Yossarian is the only person that Milo trusts and invites Yossarian to go with him on trip to gain supplies. Milo sets a course for one place and ends up in Sicily and buys eggs for 1 cents each. The book goes on to tell that Milo buys eggs cheap then sells him to himself in a different market several times to raise the price, then he sells it to the mess for 5 cents and ends up with a profit. Milo does this with dozens of different products and makes a lot of money at the syndicates expense, but Milo is in the syndicate and everyone gets a share so they don't lose money. As Yossarian continues his journey with Milo he finds out that Milo is a beloved mayor of several different cities. Milo's syndicate is named M&M Enterprises. M&M is Milo and Minderbinder, the and is there to make you think the syndicate is not just run by one person. eventually Milo is selling products to every country in North Africa and Europe, except for Russia. Milo has planes given to him by every country and works for every country. Milo informs the Americans of German weaknesses and he warns the Germans of impending attacks. Milo gains a profit from both countries and is the reason why some Americans are dying. Milo had invested alot of money in Egyptian cotton, the Egyptian cotton wasn't in high demand and the stock was plummeting. Milo had fallen almost to bankrupt when he was paid by the Germans to bomb his own squadron. Milo destoryed alot of supplies and other equipment and many wanted him dead, but the syndicate gained money that everyone else got so he wasn't in trouble.

Catch-22(v4)

There is a huge mission to the city of Bologna that is approaching. Colonel Cathcart who is the highest in command for the squadrons(next to the generals) volunteered the squadron to do the bombing mission. Bologna is rumoured to be the most deadly mission that can be done, with more flak cannons then anywhere and only a small amount of people are supposed to live. The bombing had been delayed several time because of the food poisoning(Yossarian did that) and inclement weather. When there was finally sun Yossarian and everyone else were very angry and scared. There was an operations tent with a map of the mission area, on the map was a pink ribbon marking where the ground troops were outside the city that hadn't moved in awhile. The night before the mission Yossarian snuck into the tent and moved the ribbon onto the city to make it look like it was captured, the mission was canceled. When the higher officers found out the city wasn't taken they were outraged and the mission took place anyway. After take off Yossarian was talking to the pilot when he ripped the inter comm system wiring from the wall. He then proceeded to the front of the plain and told them to turn back because of the problem. Every plane returned undamaged, there was no flak turrets but the target was missed. So the following day they set out again, Yossarian and all, When they got to Bologna they were bombarded with Flak and many people died but Yossarians evasive action got them out alive.

Catch-22(v3)

When Yossarian was in the hospital he decided to censor letters to pass time, since he was an officer he could. Yossarian would mark off every word except for "an" or "the" as censored. Yossarian would also censored the letters to be comical. When Yossarian censored he signed is name as Washington Irvin, but when he was bored with that he wrote Irving Washington as the name of the censorer. This drove C.I.D. men crazy, the C.I.D. men were like FBI that tried to figure out things that were illegal. One of the highest in commands full name is Major Major Major, his dad thought it was funny. Major was promoted to Major and is the highest in command of his local squadran. Major Major heard about someone signing Washington Irving as a name so he decided to do that with all the important orders he got. 2 C.I.D. men at different time came to see him about it both suspecting the other C.I.D. man as intercepting the letters and signing Washington Irving as the name. Major Major decided to use the John Milton and change it with Milton John because it was shorter, as he continued to sign the papers incorrectly.

Catch-22(v2)

Each chapter of Catch-22 has a center topic of one guy or place and some story about that person or place. Yossarian is still the main charcater though. Yossarian is thought by some people to be the only sane person around cause he wants to leave(but he acts insane for everyday life). Catch-22 is sort of like a form of irony, which is used in examples throughout the story. One example is: If you are insane you may leave, If you tell the doctor you are insane then you are obvioulsy sane because you want to go home, but if you don't ask the doctor then you are insane and can ask the doctor to leave, but when you ask the doctor you become sane. Another example is: The airforce says you can leave after 40 missions, the commander says you leave after 55 missions, the airforce also says to do what your commanding officer says. So you may leave after 40 missions only if the squad commander will let you, but he won't because you are needed

Catch-22

I'm reading Catch-22 by Joseph Heller for English class. I'm at chapter 8 and so far I like the book and think it's actually pretty funny. The book is about a guy named Yossarian who is on the island of Pianosa, Italy as a bombardier. Yossarian does not want to die and keeps trying to get out of the army. He spends as much time as possible in the hospital and keeps trying to get the minimum amount of missions to go home.
